EDUC 8848 Group Project

 Celluar Phone Technology

Extension/Enhancement

The landline telephone keeps a person stationary. The cell phone allows the individual to bring their telephone with them and it becomes personalized to that person. This allows the person to have individualized experience with the phone

Closure/Obsolescence

The cellular phone replaces two type of technology that are still close.  Many people now use the cellular phone in the same manner as the walkie talkie.  A person can dial a number quickly and receive help. In addition they both have a device to enhance the sound so more than one person can hear the information.

Retrieval

The cellular phone uses technology from both a walkie talkie and a landline telephone.

Reversal

The tablet may eventually replace the cellular phone in that uses many of the same characteristic.

Digital Citizenship

Digital: designating or o data, images, sounds, etc. . . . . that are stored, transmitted manipulated, or reproduced by a process using groups of electronic bits and stored on a magnetic or optical medium; the groups of bits are read electronically, as by a laser beam for reproduction; b) designating or of a type of radio or TV transmission and reception in which data, sounds, or images are sent or received as groups of electronic bits.

Citizenship: native or inhabitant of a denizen of any place.

Denizen: an inhabitant or occupant frequenter of a particular place.

A good digital citizen is a person who meets the characteristics of the combined definition listed above from Webster’s New World College Dictionary (4th Ed). This past weekend I listened to a number of webinars regarding information received or taken from the internet and responsibilities as a digital citizen.

The presenter of one of webinars brought up the topic of digital citizenship and how she explains its importance to her students.  In addition, that what is in the digital world should be cited in the same manner as the information that is retrieved  from a library. Digital citizenship has become a topic of interest among scholars. The premise of the debate is that the information in the digital is not always factual. It is difficult to determine the authenticity of information because the research may be dated, old or it is just made up. However, there are trustworthy sites where the information is good, but this information is not free or original.

The internet or World Wide Web is the first place most of us go to when we are looking up information. People are so comfortable with the internet, that they often forget that someone else put this information on the site. As a result, people forget to cite the source in their paper or give credit if they reference the material in another manner. Citing a source is giving credit to the author or originator for the information that they use from this site in any manner. Not only should printed material be cited but also music, video and pictures (of any kind). When my children were in school and found “free” material they would get excited. I would remind them it, the material wasn’t free and someone created it. Although, it was a giveaway the material should be cited because the material has an author.

As a writer, I love it when I see that someone has cited me. But I don’t like it when someone copies me and doesn’t give me credit, I get upset. We all have egos, but a good digital citizen doesn’t just take information. A good digital citizen may forget to cite it happens, unfortunately it happens more and more now and that is why more information pass coded. Forgetting is not an option in the published world of scholars and writers.

The instructor told us that in one of my first writing courses in my PhD program. We were taught to write the title, author, publication, page number and other information related to the source. The instructor told us to write the page numbers as we took notes or quotes from the material. In this manner we are able to always have the source for the reference section. This style has saved me a number of times, especially now that all of my course work goes through a plagiarism program when I turn in my assignments.

The closer I get in attainning my PhD degree, I get more nervous about things like citing sources and using quality material. This is especially true since my specialization in education is in Educational Technology.

Become a good digital citizen and learn how to cite source and identify good sources on the internet to use.

Module 1: Emerging Technology

Currently, I think of emerging technology a period of when users do not yet consider the technology essential to their everyday life or the cost of that technology to be worth purchasing for their every day life. (Coleman, 2013.) Also, emerging technology is based on the user and their environment. In addition, it is up to various users to advocate for the use of different types of technology to be purchased for their classrooms.

The following are the definition of the individuals in our resources for this week. Each individual's definition have merit.

"Dr Soloway (n.d.) described an emerging technology as technology that has yet to cross the chasm from early adopter to early majority. That phase is the period where the cost of the technology is high, and users do not yet consider the technology essential to their everyday life. By using an example of a prototype he developed, Dr. Thornburg (2009) described an emerging technology as something that has just been developed. By the time a technology hits the mainstream it is no longer emerging. Rogers (2003) defined emerging technology as an innovation that is considered new to a person a group of people. The perceived newness describes an innovation".

My original answer to what emerging technology is that it is determined in different ways, one way would be when and how it is introduced into an environment and how it is used in that environment. (2003). My definition of emerging technology is defined by the same criteria, when it is introduced and how it is introduced into an environment.  Also, emerging technology can also constitute on whether it is suited for the environment in which it is introduced to.  For an example, an area that has no internet or cell service would find a cell phone interesting but not necessary to their way of life. In this post I continue to abide by the decision;

My classmates provided interesting ideas as to why they followed Dr. Thornburg's definition of emerging technology. For some this is true, however, I have always considered myself technology wise and hang out with people who use the most recent technology.  The use of the cell phone is an example; The first portable phone I saw that was used by a private citizen was in the early 1990s.  A co worker had one in her car that her husband insisted that she have in case of an emergency.  We all thought it was cool and exciting.  However, she said that in the two years she had it she used it once.  In the year 2000, she had the form of blue tooth in her car that connected to her cell phone and  I can see why many people would follow Dr. Thornburg's definition of emerging technology, because for the most part by the time most people use technology it is already mainstreamed.

However, I still think it varies with each individuals.  In my family for instance, I use technology daily and in my professional life, I have used it since the end of the 1980s.  But in my family,  I am one of the last in my family to try something new.  My parents, sibling and their spouses, all had cell phones before I purchased my first. (It was a prepaid).  The same is true for the computer and tablets.  However, I was the first in my family to have an eReader because I love to read.  The portability of the device was great.  in my professional life, though I used computers, iPods and desktops regularly.  I was and am well versed in in using assistive technology with my students.  Devices that helped them to write, (various software) talk, and use technology.  Items like Big Macs, touch screens, voice operated software and touch operated devices for communications.

Now I look at those items and think, what a waste of money, especially since computers, tablets and cell phones have touch screens.  Not only do they have touch screens, but apps can be downloaded to do everything that the previous forms of technology used as assistive technology.  The problem, most of the money allocated for technology is utilized for the general education classroom, rather than divided among the teachers to decide their use .  In our building, I begged, pleaded and bullied everyone to get the technology in my classroom. I was the first to use iPad 1 in  my classroom as center  I have and use more technology than anyone, but I have also written four grants this year in order to get those items for my classroom.  In addition, I have two pending approval.

So I consider myself an early adopter, but it depends on the environment that I am in and the potential use of the technology. Some items, such as tablets and ipods, I have used in the classroom since early 2000 because of their portability for my students.  Other items, such as touch screen adaptations and software I continue to use, along with apps, for my students because of their convenience for testing and data collection.  However, in my personal life I have a tablet that works consistently and waiting to purchase a desktop and laptop because the two I currently owned have died.  These items were purchased in 2003 and were updated each year.  They simply wore out.  My definition of emerging technology continues to favor Dr. Rogers definition of emerging technology.

Completion Appreciation!

Building and Maintaining a Fire

This post will appear on both blogs. I have decided that there will be times when I will post the same reviews, refer to my other blog or write separate posts for each blog. This is because I am an information junkie. The theme of this post concerns a lesson learned in connection with Stewardship. A lesson that helped me remembers Erma Bombeck and Paul Harvey. I need to remember stewardship is very much like a building a fire. Stewardship uses and develops all of the gifts that we are given by God.

Erma Bombeck is a writer that I have always admired and wanted to emulate. Paul Harvey is another journalist that I have admired and wanted to emulate. Primarily, because both worked with their families and their work primary based at their home. Both writers were individuals that I wanted to become, they used all of their talents in this lifetime. I am sure that when they stand before God, he will say to both of them “Well done, good and faithful servants”. In addition, they both would have had a website and blog if that had been the case at the time.

The blogs are my way of providing an outlet for my dreams of developing my gifts, my potential, as a writer, educator and scholar.  My gifts as a wife, mother, sister, daughter, and relationship titles are personal and referred to, but not explored in a public domain. My first blog was Michelle’s Notes, which I started to fulfill criteria for one of my graduate classes in the Ph.D. program of Education (specialization in Educational Technology). The other blog, Michelle Writes, was developed because I wanted to separate my two main interests because it seemed me that they needed to be on different venues. My long term goal for these two blogs is to combine them with my pinterest boards, tweeter account and Facebook accounts, inside a website for my company titled Michelle. Inc.

The blogs have helped me complete steps in order to achieve my goals as an educator, scholar, and writer. Publishers are more likely to hire me if I have a blog. A blog will help them see my style of writing and how disciplined I am in maintaining the blog(s). In addition, some send me books to review, Woo-Hoo! I love to read, almost anything, and right now I get free books to review. Some I like and others, not so much. This is also a great place to post reviews, answers to questions, provide reflection on other people blogs and help me maintain a sense of discipline. Finally, I have always wanted to be a columnist, while I do not get paid, that to will change (I hope).

Building and Maintaining is a Lesson of Stewardship.

In order to build and maintain a fire, you cannot think about it. The does not happen because you have set a goal for the day that you will have a fire. Building a maintaining a fire requires a huge time investment. First, a person needs to acquire the necessary materials need to make a fire. Second, the wood needs to be cut into pieces that fit into a fire place. Once the wood is cut, available and placed into the fireplace. The person needs also have paper, kindling, and matches on hand as they watch the fire begin. Now the person needs to feed the fire with flammable materials until the fire is hot enough for larger pieces of word. At this point the fire does not require as much attention, but it does require attention. On regular or semi-regular intervals, pieces of wood or other flammable materials need to be added to the fire. (You cannot cram a large piece of wood into the fireplace, because if it does not fit, you will spend more time cleaning up the mess this will cause.) Once the fire is no longer needed and it goes out AND IT DOES NOT NEED TO GO OUT! The fireplace, chimney and flues all need to be cleaned. Thankfully the fireplace is the only item that needs to be cleaned daily, the other two needs to be cleaned yearly. The ashes, wood pieces and other items that get into the fire need to clean out of the fire place. This process is repeated in order to make sure that the fireplace does what it is designed to do, keep the house warm.

This synopsis is an example of being a good steward of a fire. Stewardship is the same on a much larger scale. God has given us gifts that we need to use and develop, but we need to make sure that each gift is properly attended to and developed. Also, part of Stewardship is prioritizing and starting from making sure that all of the materials are in good working order.
Stewardship

Those of you who have been following my blogs know that Stewardship is my word for the year. In addition, you also know I have been having some issues. I have determined that these issues have developed in order to block me from exploring and searching and learning about Stewardship throughout the year. I have made the right choice and it is within my power to learn these skills because God has commanded me to be successful in my exploration of this word.

I know that I have not been faithful to God and his gifts are developed in the faithful. A faithful person is like a tree, at the beginning I need to make sure that the tree is healthy and has health habits that keep the tree growing. Or in my case, as long as I have healthy habits, then I can complete whatever God has in store for me. As time goes along, various parts of my life will need to be pruned, which a good steward will learn. Areas need to be cleaned out. Check out Nehemiah as he builds his city, this book in the Bible will give you good examples.

What to Expect from Me

Regular readers of my blogs will recognize the following segment as “same song, same verse” and authors waiting for reviews will be move it, I want my review posted.  Well wait and read this and pray for me.

The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my journey as an educator and scholar.  On this post I will include:
a.       Accomplishments as an educator/scholar.

b.      Schedule of my dissertation goals (including my prospectus).

c.       Projects

d.      Research, comments on blogs I follow

e.       Book reviews.

The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my journey as a writer (author, novelist, poet, journalist, journaling, essayist and critic) and whatever is associated with my journey as a writer.  On this blog you discover:
a.        accomplishments as a writer

b.      Book reviews

c.       Project development

d.      Reflection on research, blogs and other stuff

e.       Promotions for various related area.

On each blog I will include an Appreciation Completion Day (an idea from Julie Hedlunds’ blog) and Week’s Blue Print will be posted on either Saturday or Sunday.

Appreciation Completion Day:  My goal is to go back and act on my belief that Sunday begins anew and Saturday ends the week. Therefore, Saturday night is my period for the week. (Period is a form of punctuation that ends the week. Saturday is my period day, it ends whatever goals I had for the week and nothing, no new projects, starts anew.)

Week’s Blue Print: A number of researchers (I am not going to cite, but acknowledge that it’s not original) and people I respect have stated that a plan, blessed by God, will help a person achieve their goals and develop their gifts.

Rebuilding Building
Cleaning out and rebuilding each day will help us accomplish a log of things. My hard cover calendar is set up for two years that reflect all of the things I want to accomplish in that time period. I have a list of things that learning and exploring the word of stewardship this year will help me accomplish is God allows.

EDUC 8848-1 Emerging and Future Technologies

An introduction for those of you new to this post: I am a graduate student in a Ph.D. program in Education (specialization in Educational Technology) at Waldenu online. In addition, to completing my course work in the next two quarters, I plan on completing my prospectus and intro to my dissertation.
In addition to providing a place to post my reviews and thoughts, this is also a place where I post answers or blogs to assignments for the class listed in the title section. I started this course last quarter but time constraints, health and work prevented me from completing this course. This quarter I will complete it and my prospectus (and all that includes) by mid quarter. There is a plan and I need to adhere to it in order to achieve my goal of the Ph.D. after my name. This course, Emerging and

Future Technologies deals with the following:

"The emergence of new technologies in the information age and beyond is dramatically changing the way people teach and learn in k_12 education, higher education, and corporations. Education professionals in this course explore new scholarship, collaborative tools, social networking, wireless and mobile technologies, creative commons, fair use, user-created content, and virtual worlds to become leaders in helping to diffuse these innovations. They also engage in multi-media presentation to analyze obsolete technology, assess new technology, and explore projections regarding future technological movements. through this project, education professionals are better able to conceive a world where technology is a seamless aspects of learning and work. (https://class.waldenu.edu/webapps..ourse%26id%3D_2642401_1%26url%3D)."

Each module (course within the course) has it's own objective(s), assignments, and discussion questions that I will post and answer in this blog.
